We Don't Sweat, We Sparkle!

Most forms of yoga in the West can be classified as Hatha Yoga. Hatha simply refers to the practice of physical yoga postures and breathwork, meaning your Ashtanga, Vinyasa or Yin Yang classes are all based on Hatha Yoga. The word “hatha” can be translated two ways: as “willful” or “forceful,” or the yoga of activity, and as “sun” (ha) and “moon” (tha), the yoga of balance. Hatha practices are designed to align and calm your body, mind, and spirit in preparation for meditation.

Our Hot Yoga classes are inspired by the Bikram Yoga Method en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bikram_Yoga

The originally designed yoga sequence by Bikram Choudhury is 90 minutes long and based on two principles: 1. Muscle Memory and 2. Muscle Overload. This means all postures are repeated twice (2 sets) in a yoga room which is kept at 105F and 40% humidity.

At Happy Buddha Aruba we teach 75 minutes versions in a heated room up to maximum 99F.

Tips & Precautions

  • It is essential to have your own yoga mat and towel when doing hot yoga since you will be sweating a lot.
  • The sweating you do in hot yoga also means you'll want to choose the right yoga wear. Generally, women and men find that tight-fitting tops and capris or long pants are best to prevent slipping during poses.
  • The actual temperature in a hot yoga class will vary by style and studio. At Happy Buddha Aruba we keep the temperature between 90-99F.
  • The "sweating out the toxins" catchphrase is popular among hot yoga students. The truth is that sweating is not really part of the detoxification system of our bodies, though it can make you feel better in the end. In any case you skin will be glowing.
  • Make sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after class so you don't get dehydrated. It is not advisable to eat within two hours before you take a class.
  • Hot yoga is not advised for pregnant women, people with known cardiovascular disease or on high blood pressure medication and epilepsy since it can raise the core body temperature. When in doubt if this yoga style is for you consult with your physician first.
